ARPO members and guests set off on a bright sunny day from the three coach pick-up points for a relaxing trip to Lorca and it’s castle. Obviously many of us knew beforehand that the town had suffered very badly in the earth tremor on 11 May 2011, when significant localised damage was caused and nine people unfortunately died with nearly 300 people injured. There are many buildings in Lorca still undergoing repairs, as well as steel strapping to support others.
We arrived in Lorca just after 11.00am and the little rubber-wheeled train was ready and waiting for us. We all piled in, with every seat being taken and proceded to tour around the ancient town of Lorca, complete with clanging bell from the ‘engine’! After the short tour the train then took us up the hillside to the castle at the top, where we had very welcome refreshments. The views were stunning in every direction which, perhaps, is why there is a Parador Hotel situated within part of the castle. After a good look around the battlements and one or two old relics (no, not ARPO members) we all boarded the train for the return trip to our coach waiting to take us the short distance to the restaurant Meson Lorquina.
The typical Spanish menu del dia was very good indeed, acompanied by wine and coffee and everyone seemed to enjoy the ambience. A small cash raffle was held and our Chairman gave a vote of thanks and tips to the staff of the restaurant, after which we all had to be encouraged back on to the coach for the scenic trip back.
A great big THANK YOU to Dreena and Fred, who put in so much organisation once again.
